At a talk to York Rotary on 14th November Leon Guyett, Regeneration Director of Homes England outlined the statutory role of this government agency to work with the private sector to deliver the challenging housing targets. The agency priorities are sustainable affordable housing on previously developed sites. York Central is an excellent example of this in practice. It will deliver over the next 12 years 2500 new homes, (20% affordable) 1million sq ft of commercial and retail space, create 6500 jobs all on redundant railway land.
The key to unlocking the opportunities was the £135m funding of the essential infrastructure. Progression would be from the private sector and Joint Venture Developers, McLaren Arlington, have that responsibility. Their stated ambition is to be the Kings Cross of the North.
Quoting Leon - they have talked the talk - my job is to ensure they walk the walk and deliver and from what we heard that is likely to be the case.
